On Saturday, I celebrated my 42nd trip around the sun. To start the day, Not Jersey took me to brunch at Ken's House of Pancakes. Ken's is a Big Island classic. Not Jersey had never been to Ken's! He liked it. I had the seafood omelette with hollandaise, hashbrowns, and pancakes. Not Jersey had the teri-beef hoagie with mac salad (very local) and onion rings.
Later in the day we ate cake (white cake with white frosting), and I opened my presents. I got a massage gift certificate to my favorite masseuse, a Target gift card, and a new waterproof Kindle with a waterproof case. My old Kindle was gifted to me by a friend and may be the original edition. It works fine, but it doesn't have a back light. We finished off the evening with pizza and Harry Potter. It was a perfect day.
Throughout the day I received texts, phone calls, and lots of Facebook messages. I believe Facebook's best feature is "the birthday alert." My favorite call was from my Grandpa.
I now understand that 42 is a big deal in "nerd culture." I have never read "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy," so I didn't know. I still do not know the meaning of life. It didn't dawn on me Saturday morning. I am fine with not knowing.
Birthdays are special, and Not Jersey nailed it. I am so lucky. I hope to celebrate the rest of my birthdays with him.
