Gary Palm Watercolor Class

Mom and I went to a watercolor class on January 19, 2024 at One Gallery. We painted little yellow honey creeper ('akiapōlā'au) birds. It was my 3rd Gary Palm class.

Mom doesn't need classes. She already knows how to watercolor. I think she likes to have an occasion to paint.

First we traced our pictures. Next we shaded the yellow parts with a light yellow. Next we painted some green. On it went.

Gary walked around and gave us tips and demonstrated by painting parts of our pictures for us. A common technique he uses is "wet and drop." You wet a large part of the picture and then drop some paint onto the canvas. The paint will spread wherever there is water.

Gary was showing us the brush strokes to use for the birds back feathers. I sat back, hoping he would paint my entire bird. Mom gave him shoo-shoo hands.

Mom was not pleased with her painting. I am not a fan of birds, so I was not invested. Each time I try to practice the techniques and ask questions.

Our class started at 6 pm and we finished at 8:30 pm. There were 9 participants. We ate snacks (pupus). It was a nice little evening.

Here is my bird. I think he looks a little cartoon eyed.

Here is Mom's bird, which looks like an actual bird. Her background also turned out much better than mine.
