The Cruise

Not Jersey took me on a 10-day Alaskan cruise. We sailed the inner passage round-trip from Seattle. It was such a blast!

Neither of us had ever cruised before. My history of motion sickness kept me ashore. Not Jersey planned to travel to Alaska on the State Ferry.

It started like this:

Me: I’d be willing to try a cruise.

Not Jersey: (excitedly grabs computer) If you could cruise anywhere, where would you go?

Me: Alaska

Not Jersey: How does this sound: Juneau, Sitka, Dawes Glacier, Haines, Hubbard Glacier, Ketchikan, and Victoria, BC?

Me: That sounds INCREDIBLE, but what if I get sick and throw up the whole time?

Not Jersey: Then we get off the boat in Juneau and fly home.

Me: Ok…really?

Not Jersey: (pulls out credit card and books cruise and airfare)

Me: 😍

We did ZERO research on which cruise line was best, getting the best deal, or the best time to sail to Alaska. We lucked out on many counts, and we learned a few things. Mostly we learned we LOVE cruising.

I didn’t expect to like the ship as much as I did. I expected to spend every possible minute off the ship. Not so. Not when we could go back aboard for lunch and a nap!

Not Jersey appreciated many things about the cruise ship. He met the crew. He was so happy they should have made him the honorary captain. I’m pretty sure if it hadn’t been freezing cold, he would have slept on our balcony every night.

We are keen to book our next cruise. How keen? We have a # of days until next cruise sign hanging in the living room. Unfortunately, Not Jersey created a computer program that links the countdown to our diet goal. Yesterday it was 161 days to next booking…

I guess, on average, people gain one pound per day on a cruise. I have always prided myself on being above average, and this was no different! There was the UNLIMITED soft serve ice cream at the buffet. I put my years Bob’s Drive-In experience to good use. I made the most beautiful bowls of twist ice cream, which I consumed with joy, as I watched humpback whales jumping out the dining room window. It was truly magical.

Unfortunately, there is no magic to disappear the extra pounds from my waist. So, dieting commences. Luckily, as data populates the computer program, we are getting closer to our next cruise!
