This is my first Jhumpa Lahiri book. I have held many of her books in my hands. I am drawn to their titles, covers, and her name.
In theory, this book was right up my alley. I like family dramas that are rooted in "place." The Lowland takes place in Calcutta and in Rhode Island. I have an affinity for India, because I visited on two mission trips.
I had a hard time getting into this book. It wasn't my favorite. Obviously, a lot of other people liked it, because it was a National Book Award Finalist.
I bought this book in Maui for a quarter. I go through phases with books: buying and not buying. It is hard not to buy when books are a quarter. The only thing better is free.
I miss "Little Free Libraries." Little Free Libraries are usually in someone's yard or at a business, and it is has free books. It is encouraged to exchange a book for your book. There were lots of Little Free Libraries in Nebraska.
Hawaii doesn't have too many downsides, but one of them is books. The humidity is hard on books. It turns them musty and moldy. The pages stick together. They become a home for booklice.
